Canada Win Football Women’s Final Tokyo 2020
Christine Sinclair, the all-time international record goalscorer, praised Bev Priestman and said that they were “claiming” the English manager after Sinclair led Canada to Olympic gold.
Julia Grosso, University of Texas, scored the decisive penalty to win Canada a silver medal match against Sweden. The sudden-death shootout was won after a Jessie Fleming penalty canceled Stina Blackstenius’s first-half goal and forced the game past 90 minutes. Hedvig Lindahl, a veteran goalkeeper, and Stephanie Labbe, her counterpart, were the heroes. Each team scored only two of the first five penalties before Grosso stopped Jonna Andersson’s timid attempt. Canada won the match.
Canada won gold at the Olympic women’s soccer tournament after a 3-2 sudden death penalty shootout win over Sweden. This was following a 1-1 draw in extra time.
Canada’s goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe was outstanding with her two saves in the shootout. This set up Julia Grosso (20 years old) who scored the last spot-kick to win it for Canada, 3-2. After someone knocked Brazil out in the quarterfinals of the tournament on PKs, Canada won the shootout.

Canada’s top defenders saved it from several dangers during the match. The most dangerous was a goal-line clearance with just three minutes remaining in extra time. Desiree Scott, Kadeisha Buchanan, and Ashley Lawrence were all key defenders in Canada’s match. Labbe was also present during the match, making a few stops.
Team USA eventually took the bronze medal on Thursday after a thrilling seven-goal encounter with Australia, but now it’s all eyes on Sweden and Canada to see who triumphs as Olympic champions in Japan.
