Predictions and Tips for Mexico vs El Salvador Gold Cup
Mexico and El Salvador will battle it out for Group A’s top spot on Sunday night when they face off in Round 3 of the Concacaf Gold Cup. After a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador was the first team to secure a quarterfinal ticket for this term’s Gold Cup.
After the win over Guatemala, it was the second consecutive victory of the Hugo Perez-led team. This bright start to the 2021 Gold Cup campaign has El Salvador at the top of Group A, ahead of the final round fixture against Mexico.
El Salvador has thus far beaten their previous Gold Cup score of 0 when they couldn’t find a way out. Mexico, on the contrary, must still theoretically qualify for the quarterfinals. The defending champions are almost there after a 3-0 win over Guatemala in round 2.
Rogerio Funes Mori, an Argentinean born in Argentina, was the star of Wednesday’s Mexican victory over Guatemala.
Funes Mori only made his Mexican debut this month, in a friendly against Nigeria (a win of 4-0). He has scored three goals in his three El Tri appearances and will be a major threat to El Salvador’s goal Sunday.

- In nine of the ten most recent head-to-head matches, three or more goals were scored.
Prediction: Mexico vs El Salvador
El Salvador and Mexico have not conceded a goal each in their first two fixtures of the tournament. Due to their obvious differences in quality, the Mexicans are huge favorites going into this game. We don’t expect this contest to be very high-scoring, especially considering El Salvador’s overall performance this year.
El Salvador conceded just one goal in eight of the competition’s last eight matches. Although Mexico is stronger than any opponent El Salvador has faced, we believe that only one goal can make the difference. Mexico must win to nil.

- Football Whispers Prediction One: Double Chance – El Salvador, or Draw @ 11/4
- Football Whispers Prediction 2: Both Teams to Score. Yes @ 11/10
- Football Whispers Prediction Three: Total Goals – Over 2.5 @ 8/11
Double Chance – El Salvador, or Draw
We are not going to go along with the grain. Of course, it is no secret that the favorites to win this whole thing are also the favorite in this game. We are not predicting El Salvador’s success here. Mexico’s last 10 wins are actually more than El Salvador’s last 10. We could also sense the hesitation of the favorites during the goalless draw against Trinidad and Tobago. Mexico’s win was valued at 1/10. It didn’t happen. Both sides will be guaranteed to progress to the eliminations round if the game ends in a draw.
Both Teams to Score – Yes
We can see the BTTS – Yes trend in the head-to-head records for these two sides. Sixteen of the eight games they played between 2003 and now ended with both teams scoring. Only two exceptions have occurred so far.
Match total goals – More than 2.5 Goals
Mexico scores lots of goals when it’s not flopping. El Salvador has also shown it is capable of scoring the goal, failing to score in two of its recent games. The success rate of this bet in head to head games is what really seals the deal. Seven of the eight meetings ended with more than 2.5 goals.
